This page provides links to my articles on binoculars, which
complement my recently published book Binoculars and People. These articles are mainly comparative reviews of models that have been in my reference collection, or those that
I've borrowed. There will also be some articles showcasing new instruments that I think are of special note - these
will be presented under the heading 'first looks'. A final tranche of articles deals with more general topics on choosing
and using binoculars.
These articles have been produced partly in response to requests from fellow binocular enthusiasts for me place on record
the key findings from the many comparative reviews I've carried out over the last five years. During this time, as I worked
on my book, I put together a large reference collection of over 500 instruments from all the key manufacturers, spanning over
100 years of production. This has given me privileged access to a significant proportion of the finest models ever made. It
seemed timely to document, from all those binoculars I've used, which I consider the top picks.
These articles clearly represent my subjective
opinion on the comparative performance of the binoculars reviewed. I have, however, gone to some lengths to bring as much
objectivity to the process as possible. This includes the use of standardised test charts, the testing of instruments in a
variety of different lighting conditions and the opinions of a range of other experienced binocular users.
