Research

I believe strongly that education should be an evidence-based profession. By this I mean we should use findings from academic research to find better ways of doing things in our schools. I think this will help teachers to become experts in learning, rather like doctors are experts in healing.

The science underpinning effective teaching and learning is education psychology and I'm involved in several education research projects of my own, in collaboration with schools, universities and companies. Many of these are feeding into my doctoral studies in education at Leeds university. Brief details are given below - if you want to more about my research projects in education get in touch for a chat.

Logovisual pedagogy in the classroom: an evaluation
This is the title of the forthcoming doctoral thesis, which I am completing as a part-time PhD student in the education department at Leeds university. This research project is really exciting: I have carried out the world's first academically rigorous study of how logovisual thinking can influence learning. It has been based in a comprehensive school in Lancashire, working with real teachers and students! I am currently writing up my thesis which I will submit for examination in 2010. I will be placing journal articles about this work in academic periodicals in due course. If you are a research student or academic interested in thinking skills, social constructivism or visual tools it is likely my work will be of interest to you. Do get in touch for a discussion. If you want to know more about logovisual thinking, please visit the website of my friends at the Centre for Management Creativity. There is also an article about its use in schools here.
