The first tool is shown below - it helps you to think about the importance of planning to your work and that of your students.

TOOL 1: PLANNING FOR SUCCESS

Success

Study the graphic above which suggests a key reason why planning is central to the work of all teachers, and to their students.

a) Make a list of all the ways in which planning is important in your work as a teacher.

b) Now do the same for your students.

c) How can you help your students to plan better, using examples from your own work as a teacher?

d) Are there any aspects of your planning that you would like to improve? Which aspects are these?

e) Work with a like-minded colleague to consider how you could address this aspect of your work as a teacher. When you recognise constraints consider what could be done at the classroom, whole school or local authority level to address these, and thereby improve your planning?

f) Encourage your students to be reflective about their own planning skills, by finding a way of building this in to a lesson. If you identify common training needs for students, this could be the start of some important whole school work on this subject.
